Over the past couple of
years the music world has been bowled over by the arrival of the
dance artist album. Rightly, acts like Chemical Brothers,
Reprazent and Underworld has made ground breaking long players of
solid gold. But this reinvention of dance music into a sci-fi
rock 'n' roll, with bands and tours and albums and videos, leaves
the DJ, the inventor and interpreter, behind. The situation isn't
helped by the badly thought out cash-in compilations currently
flooding larger record shops. Looping together a herd of 'big
tunes', then getting some A-list DJ to lend his name to the
sleeve while studio pro-tools do the work helps labels make money,
but has nothing to do with what DJing is really about. Real DJs
make albums of their own, every night they play. Their able to
steer people through records they don't know, holding a crowd's
anticipation and twisting and turning it without missing a beat,
is a skill halfway between art and craft. People expect more from
an album than simply a collection of stormin' trax, they want
diversity, longevity and a handful of different flavours and
moods. They want something that you can listen to from beginning
to end, over and over again. Well, prepare to be blown away.

(I shit on (mostly all)
guitarbands)
Acid House: A Chicago derivative built
around the Roland TBR303 bassline machine. Hard, uncompromising,
tweaking samples produce a hypnotic effect.
Chicago House: Simple basslines, driving four-on-the-floor
percussion and textured keyboard lines are the basic elements of
the original house sound.
Rave-Hardcore: The devolution of techno to its
rawest elements under the influence of DIY DJs from England and
Belgium--high speed breakbeats and vocal samples.
Techno: Pure rhythm mixed with
industrial-strength sounds originating in Detroit's urban core. One of the
greatest minimal techno-artists is Dave Clarke.
Dave Clarke

Dave Clarke did
play his gig every fridaynciht on Studio Brussel,

Dave Clarke has done more for
techno over the past years than anyone else. With Red 1 he threw
down the gauntlet, with Red 2 he wiped the floor with anyone else
in the techno field, and with Red 3 he more than consolidated his
position.
God behind the decks.

Joey Beltram

At the tender age of 12,
Joey began deejaying. At 17, he recorded his first 12"
single. For eight years, he has deejayed all over the world.
Beltram currently stands as a huge draw for dance events around
the world, specifically in England, Germany, Holland, Sweden,
Mexico, Japan, Australia and the cosmopolitan centers of the
United States. Joey Beltram is special because is he is more than
just the average techno DJ and producer. He is an artist that
nurtures the tracks he produces rather than banging them out --
the end result is music that is constantly favored and imitated
by producers worldwide. (Live mix)

Joey Beltram. A name to
be known in the international musical community for the new millenium. The
Queens born and bred DJ and producer has paved the road of the current 90s
electronica musical revolution which is now being championed by the likes of
artists like the Chemical Brothers and The Orb. Beltram's brilliance as a
producer has been heard in over 30 countries worldwide, and he is also the main
player responsible for influencing and establishing a musical movement that is
gaining mainstream popularity and acceptance at an increasingly alarming rate.
He is now continuing his trademark of musical innovation with the new release
Joey Beltram Live Mix.

Beltram's musical inspiration is derived from his
infatuation with Detroit and Chicago house music. The raw, electro-driven beats
and kinetic energy of the 80s sound of artists like Chip-E and Adonis -- not the
sounds of the Paradise Garage in the Big Apple -- are what stirred him to begin
producing his own tracks. Joey's first release came out on New York imprint Nu
Groove under the moniker Code 6. His work with Nu Groove was followed by tracks
with Atmosphere Records, Easy Street, Trax Records of Chicago and the most
prominent techno label of the time, R&S Records of Belgium.
In 1989, Joey traveled to Gent, Belgium, where he
launched his future as a DJ in Europe. His career flourished, returned to Queens
in 1991, and laid down the track "Energy Flash", unknowingly writing a
new chapter in the musical history books. This classic swept dancefloors
worldwide ushering in a new era of dance music with its bass-fueled bottom
heaviness and its infamous sample voicing the words "ecstasy,
ecstasy". In 1995 Beltram released his highly acclaimed debut LP Places (Tresor),
which was reported by Muzik magazine as one of the best albums of 1996 due to
its minimal simplicity and originality. Once again, Joey broke down another set
of barriers in dance music, further escalating the buzz around his presence as
an innovator.
Joey Beltram Live Mix combines the highlights of
Joey's career, with his favorite tracks from techno's archives and current
dancefloor staples into a mix as one would hear if they encountered his sound on
the dancefloor. The twelve track album includes Joey's own "Ogo", the
anthem "Energy Flash" and the favorite "Game Form" which
first appeared on Places with mixes by Robert Armani and Mike Dearborn.

Jeff
Mills

For techno aficionados,
Jeff Mills needs no introduction as he represents the ultimate in
minimal, hard but funky house and techno. More than just club
tracks, his cleverly crafted compositions have been hailed as
soundtracks to modern life and he has stated that each work
represents the next part in a series of gradual progressions that
is orchestrated by experiences and destiny. Jeff, the seminal
Detroit techno originator who has been running his own Axis
Records label since 1991, was originally one of the legendary
Detroit techno collective Underground Resistance. He has been
making music for 10 years and has been DJ'ing for longer,
including years spent as a radio DJ.
He is for sure the
biggest techno DJ in the world. Nevertheless the most asked
techno DJ is a cultivated intellectual. Gold necklaces are not
expended on him. Jeff Mills is the personification from the (electronic)
groove; the man who gave techno hips. Everybody who spent the
last ten years in a dance club, heard his music. The luckiest
have seen him as a DJ; a man behind three turntables and a 909
drum computer in supreme concentration working at the groove.
What Mills
can do with the turntables is astonishing. Being first a member
of Underground Resistance and later on solo with a continually
stream of vinyl on his labels "Axis (The other day)" and "Purposemaker". After his performance in
Paradiso, where he take care of a collective orgasm on the main
floor the first weekend of 1998, he will perform at Innercity the
first big event in Holland. You are warned, don't miss this
change to see him.
Gayle San

Leaving her
native Singapore some nine years ago, Gayle's first steps into the London clubs
were via DJing at record company parties, various one-off guest spots and
fashion shows. These slots soon led to Gayle being made resident at "Reach
for the Sky" at London's Limelight club, where she played alongside global
DJ Paul Oakenfold, a time which Gayle describes as "the steepest learning
curve possible". Having honed her DJing skills and broadened her
understanding of music, particularly the less known techno sound coming into
Britain, from Europe and Detroit in America.

DJ Paul Oakenfold, a time which Gayle describes as "the steepest learning
curve possible". Having honed her DJing skills and broadened her
understanding of music, particularly the less known techno sound coming into
Britain, from Europe and Detroit in America.
Her chance to pioneer this music, in England came when
Gayle became resident at Universe's legendary Final Frontier club,
at Club U.K in south London, which then moved to become Universe Voyager
at their new club the Complex in north London. Widely regarded as one of
the best club nights in the world. It was not long before Gayle had amassed a
following of techno pilgrims who would make journeys from as far as Edinburgh
& Southampton to hear her play.
Gayle's reputation spread like wildfire over the techno
centre's of Europe, most notably a residency once a month at Sven Vath's
legendary Omen club in Frankfurt, the "Mecca of techno". Other
European and American dates have included some of the most underground clubs in
the world, like E-Work and Tresor in Berlin. Sunrise Zone in Athens, the Cave
Club in Austria, Planet E in Switzerland, Sputnik 1 in Hungary, Bionic in
Detroit, Pure Pleasure parties in Chicago and many more all over Europe.
DJing has naturally led to various studio work, Gayle
has developed a sound that takes the hard intelligent beats of the underground,
hardhouse/techno sound mixed with her very own style. She has recorded tracks
under the name Transmakus namely Universe Anthem and Violator
which have been included on the Tribal Gathering 94 and 95 albums
respectively. Gayle has also recorded a single 'Way of the Dragon' for Rainforest
records. Also mixed a live set for the Tribal Gathering 96 album,
which also featured Marshall Jefferson. She is now writing and producing tracks,
for her new label Equator with Undercover Music, and going under
the name of Naga. Her first solo E.P will be out in October '97.
With her busy studio productions, and her non-stop
DJing gigs across the globe together with residencies at Universe Voyager,
Tribal Gathering and the Omen, the future of Singapore's finest technological
export has never looked brighter.
Gayle is currently resident for Universe Voyager at the
Complex in London, and Universe Tribal Gathering's around the world, and not
forgetting the Omen club in Germany.

SVEN VÄTH

His "story"
started in the middle of the '80's and in the beginning his style
was the typical sound of Frankfurt where he played at "The
Vogue" and the "Dorian Gray", the most famous
clubs of town. Sven then developed his own style that was
influenced by the rising romantic movements of that time, but
also the underground import records from America became more and
more important to him. In 1986 he became a little pop star when
he produced the hit "Electric Salsa" together with the
future producers of Snap. Together with one of his partners he
started the old "Vogue" under a new name: "Omen".
The Omen was one of the most important chapters of German Club
history. In 1989 Sven started the "Mosaic" project.
Various clubhits and remixes were the result till the end of 1990.
Sven was again the first DJ who played techno in Germany.
