Painting an Empire Captain

The armor

For the armor I painted on a basecoat of Tin Blitz. This was then highlighted with Boltgun metal, covering all but the deepest recesses. Next Chainmail was used to paint a further highlight. Another highlight was painted on using mithril silver.

I then applied some washes to the areas that were deeper. I was careful to thin the washes. It turned out I had to do it three times to get the result I wanted, but it beats having to strip your model and start over again because you've used to much in the first try.

The chainmail

For the chainmail I followed the same procedure as with the normal armor. Except for the washes. I wanted to create some depth in places that had none. So I painted washes in the way the chainmail would have folded in real life. You can see how this is done if you look at the back of the model.

Look below the bag. There are two darker stripes there that are done in the way described. Also the sleeve on the left has been a bit exaggerated with washes to create a more life-like effect.

The clothing

The yellow was painted in the following way:
First Scorched brown was painted on. Next bestial brown, the a 50/50 mix of bestial brown and snakebite leather. After that snakebite leather on its own.
Next came a 50/50 mix of snakebite leather and golden yellow. the final high light was golden yellow on its own.

This might seem a bit much, but this is mainly because it was my first serious attempt at painting a character with yellow clothing. If I had to do it again I'd ditch the Scorched brown. And the Bestial/snakebite mix. I found out the first few layers of high lighting do not show on the model.

For the eye it becomes one dark place in between the black and the yellow. So there isn't much use for going through all that work.

For the black I used a basecoat of..well black! I then made a mix of 80/20 Chaos black and Codex gray. It was only slightly lighter that the base coat, but enough to be seen. Next I added a bit more to the mix making it 65/35 or so. The final highlight was made using a 50/50 mix.
Highlighting this little color made sure the black areas would look highlighted, without looking gray.

The skin

I think the skin has turned out very well. Especially since up until now I've mainly been painting Orcs. The skin was first basecoated With Dark Flesh, then an equal mix of Dark flesh and Dwarf flesh was applied. Dwarf Flesh was added in the mix in an additional two steps until the final highlight was painted using dwarf flesh on it's own.

The leather

The bag (and the leather on the sword) was painted using scorched brown. Then highlighted using bestial brown. Next came a mixture of 50/50 Bestial Brown and snakebite leather.
They were given a final highlight of snakebite leather on the raised areas.

The skull

The skull was undercoated black. The first layer was done using Scorched brown, then came bestial brown. the next highlight was vomit brown, followed by bleached bone.

The base

The base was done very simple. I first glued on the skull (before painting it), next I glued some sand to the base, using watered down PVA glue. The sand was painted with brown wash and (very, very carefully) drybrushed with bleached bone. Then the skull was painted using the colors described above.

Finally I added some small patches of static grass to give the appearance of the rough lands near the World edge mountains, where the rough mountain meets the grasslands of Averland.
