Ideas for Terrain

This section doesn't actually describe conversions or terrain-making, it just gives you ideas to build terrain for Mordheim, Wargames.

Barricades

First thing you need in Mordheim are barricades. These serve as cover, and add to the atmosphere of the game just think about all the fights that were held in the streets of Morheim, all the shoot-out's between gangs. What do you want when you're being shot at? Yes! a big piece of cover. So you build one out of various pieces of rubbish lying around, after a battle your terribly happy or terribly dead, either way you don't clean up the barricades, and leave them standing in the streets.

Knowing this your gonna need lots of them. They can be made from various materials, because they would be made of anything that was in reach. First of, you make a base for the barricade to stand on. Then you decide what material you want, and just glue it onto the base in a disorderly like. If your using pebbles or stones, these do have to be somewhat organized onto the base, all other materials look better when stashed up a pile.

Some old walls that used to be in the city can also be used as barricades, try to make a ruined wall, and reinforce it with wooden boards (strips of balsa).

Here's an example of a barricade:

Statues.

The statue itself

The statue itself can be any model you have lying around and aren't going to use. Generally something with a dynamic pose works best, but you'll have to decide for yourself.

The pedestal

The pedestal can be made of almost any material. Inulation foam, a piece of wood, some cardboard and other such materials. For the one below I used two caps of toothpase tubes glued together and stuck on a base.
If you go for a square base be sure to add some strips of cardboard around the corners to give some depth to the model. Its always easiest to simply make the pedestal the same size as the models base, since this ensures you don't have to do any pinning in order to glue it on.
Another good addition is (as always) skulls, broken swords, old shields and just about anything you have lying around.

Once the pedestal is finished simply glue the statue in place. and it's ready for paining.

Painting can be done in different grey tones for the statue to make it look like stone. Alternativelly you van try and give the statue a brass look.
Do this by painting the statue Goblin Green. Next drybrush with Tin Bitz and a final drybrush with Dwarf bronze. Your statue then looks something like the one below.

Caged prisoners

This one I used previously on a castle for Warhammer, the castle never got finished, but I still had half a cage lying around, and I decided to use it for Mordheim. All you do is build a Cage from toothpicks, and put in one of the zombies or skeletons. Then build some sort of support for it, you could put it on a large stake, or just hang it from a building.

Warbands home

Now were not going to make just any house, were gonna make your warband a home from where they start al their operations. This house should be a wrecked house (like all Mordheim houses) but because your warband lived in it for a while now, they've probably improved it.

Start as normally with a Mordheim house, but this time make the house out of wood rather then cardboard, because it will be a bit harder to get into while playing a game, and you wouldn't want to wreck it (again :). Make the walls so that they are crumbled, but the four corners of the house must still be standing, make the house larger than the rest, because will need to get in it during games.

Once the outer walls are standing, make the base of the roof, it must cover all the house, make it of thin wood, or sturdy cardboard. Next you'll have to put in some wooden strips, to strengthen the roof, and keep it in place while on the house. Yes, the roof can be taken of (how else would you get in it during a game). Once you've made the roof fit, you'll notice you've just build a see-through house, because the outer-walls are still crumbled. For this we use cardboard again.

Place the roof on the house, and hold the cardboard inside the walls, touching the roof. Take a pencil and draw the contours of the wall onto the cardboard. Now cut the cardboard, making it sort-of fit into the outer wall. It doesn't matter that you still can see through your house, because your warband didn't fix the wall with cardboard, so your gonna have to fix it up anyway.

The original parts of the house (the wooden parts of the walls, and part of the roof) get treated like all other houses. Make sure you have the roof in place when glueing on the tiles, because they shouldn't come any further than the edge's of the wooden walls. Once this is done, you should cover any cardboard still in sigth. Do this mostly with wooden strips, make it so that it looks like your warband put very much effort into this. Don't put the wood in straight lines, because your warband members aren't carpenters, there fighters. Putting in some windows for shooting could be a good defensive idea, putting them at ground level and making them 3 by 3 inch is not.

This should finish your houses exterior. The interior doesn't have many features, because during games, your mini's should be able to 'walk' freely. You could make an extra floor, do this by creating a small walkway along the walls. Don't close it up, because you want to be able to use the main floor. Detailing requires a little more skill than normal Mordheim houses, because this house isn't all rubbish, it should have some useful things too, also keep the rubbish to a minimum, there live people in here. Be sure to put in something that can be used a chairs, and beds. Also your warbands spare weapons are in here.

Congrats, you've found a home for your warband, now go and paint it.
